I first started taking pictures of pigeons about ten years ago during a high school photography class. We had an assignment to produce a group of photos dealing with a subject of our choice and pigeons seemed like a good way to go. I took photos in Manhattan and London and they were displayed, along with work by the rest of the class, in the high school art building.
In the years that followed I tried to take snap shots of pigeons wherever I encountered them - New York, London, Barcelona, Athens GA, Washington DC, Asheville NC, Richmond VA, and so on. At first I just used an automatic camera and pasted the resulting images in a little book. Now I have a somewhat fancier camera and I print the images myself. Plus, I maintain this lovely website.
Pigeons appeal to me. I like it that they walk around city streets when they could be flying, and I like it that they don't have arms. I like the way they look at me when I'm chasing them with my camera, and I like it that they are found in so many different places, surrounded by people but basically ignored. I like it when I see an elusive cow-pigeon.
People inevitably ask me, why do you take pictures of pigeons? But I don't really have an answer. Why don't you take pictures of pigeons?
